Architecture

Piece of Art

The Basilica of San Florenzo

The Basilica of San Florenzo mainly appeals to me due to the meaning behind its structure. The altar always pointing east to Jerusalem and the detail put into the material to give the building a unique feel is what I believe architecture should be, Form and Function.

What to learn?

  • The structure was built in the Renaissance style between 1422 and 1470 by Filippo Brunelleschi
  • It is located in Florence, Italy and claims to be the oldest in the city
  • The facade that was commisioned to Michaelangelo by Pople Leo X remained unbuilt

Music

Piece of Art

Dinah

I enjoy Dinah because of the fun feeling I get from it. The brass instruments in the piece give me this reaction, creating a catchy melody. Louis’ voice also plays a part in this feeling and his happiness and expressiveness really makes you fall in love with the song.

  • Recorded in New York City on May 4, 1930
  • Louis Armstrong is known as the father of jazz, the one figure most credited with moving the Western world from the age of classical music
  • He recorded songs for five decades

How to Train your Dragon

I enjoyed the powerful musical score that showed the emotions of each scene perfectly. The simple story was enjoyable, and although the main concept had be done before, it's presentation in this film was great. My favorite scene would have to be Hiccup and Toothless flying for the first time.

What to learn?

  • The soundtrack was composed by John Powell
  • Animators had to attend “flight school” during production where they studied flight physics and movements of different creatures to create realistic characters.

Theatre

Piece of Art

Hamilton

One of the only theatre performances I have watched fully and the one I most enjoy. The meaning behind the lyrics, the expressions of the characters and the energy by the performers wowed me. It taught me about history and was also a dazzling performance.

What to learn?

  • Hamilton originally started as a mixtape of the life of Alexander Hamilton
  • It took Lin-Manuel Miranda a year to write Hamilton's first song
  • Hamilton was inspired by Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton

Enjoying The Evening Cool Viewing Fireworks At Ryôgoku Bridge

I enjoy the bustling town in which the piece takes place, seeing a crowd of people crowding to see the fireworks and interacting with shops. The light colors used are enjoyable and the detail towards each item in the picture.

What to learn?

  • An example of Ukiyo-e
  • Fireworks were an indispensable feature of evenings on the river. By the mid-seventeenth century, they were so popular that the threat of fire led authorities to issue decrees restricting their use to the Sumida River.
